During the Middle Ages Europe was ruled by many rulers including Charlemagne who i consider as the most successful monarch at that time. Charlemagne, also called Charles I, Charles the Great was the king of Franks, King of Lombards, and is generally considered the first Holy Roman emperor. He combined a large portion of Europe under his rule, he promoted learning and instituted innovative administrative concepts.
I consider Charlemagne as the most successful because he built a strong empire that reached across France and Germany. In 800 he was crowned Holy Roman emperor by Pope Leo III because he defeated the rebellious nobles in Rome. I believed that Charlemagne was the best Roman Emperor they could have because by making him Holy Roman emperor, this cements the idea of a united Christian community.
Charlemagne tried to create a united Christian empire by working closely with the church and helping spread christianity to people which, I believe, shows that he is caring about the people in the frontiers of his empire. |
Charlemagne expanded the Frankish nation through force of arms. He loved to battle. He was a very successful conqueror who reunited much of old Roman empire. During his 46-year reign, he fought Muslims in Spain, the Saxons in the North, the Avars and Slavs in the East and the Lomards to rule locals in Italy.
I think that Charlemagne was also a great military leader because he appointed powerful nobles to rule local regions and gave them land so that they could support him and supply soldiers. Charlemagne also set officials called "missi dominici" to check on roads, listen to grievances, and make sure that justice was done. |
Charlemagne was a man who had potential and goals. He hoped to make his capital Aachen a "second Rome". To achieve that goal, he promoted education and revived Latin learning throughout his empire. He set up a school at Aachen and appointed a respected scholar, Alcuin, to run the school. Charlemagne was very successful by making Latin learning model of medieval education in Europe.
After his death, Charlemagne left a lasting legacy. He also set up a strong, efficient government, that later medieval rulers looked to his example to centralize their own kingdoms which also shows how successful he was. |
